Meet the Author

I thought I'd take a time out from my usual fare of witty insights and pictures of my children to share a bit about myself. These things that are absolutely unimportant to your life today and yet precisely the kinds of things best friends know about each other. If you read my blog we're basically BFFs, so I trust you'll love me in spite of and perhaps because of a few of these things.

I am a stickler for grammar. If you send me an email with a spelling error I will question your IQ. I can't help it. Top grammatical pet peeves are the misuse of its/it's and your/you're. I particularly hate it when I see billboards that say, "Open Sunday's."

I talk too much. As far back as I can remember this has been a problem for me. I struggled through being a BIG liar and I think it was primarily because I ran out of true things to say.

I married up. I mean...clearly B Daddy did well for himself. But comparatively speaking, I think I did better.

I think I'm pretty good at everything I do. Don't judge. Once I discover I'm not good at something I generally drop it. This explains why motherhood has been so tricky for me.

I don't mind if our toilets have black rings around them, but even one dirty dish in the sink makes me anxious.

I love to read. And I love people who love to read. It's like finding a kindred spirit, even if they love Vince Flynn and you're more the Jane Austen type. Yesterday I bought some new books at the thrift store and I introduced B Daddy to each one last night like they were guests in the house.

I like to talk about politics and religion.

I hate small talk. Unless I really love the people I'm small talking with and then I will small talk you under the table. But really I'd rather talk politics and religion.

I've always wished I were a musician. My musical skill set in no way qualifies me to perform publicly, but it doesn't stop me from wishing I was on stage.

I went to two elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools. Each time we moved, we moved in the middle of the school year. My parents had a theory about making friends before summer ...the jury is still out on whether or not theirs was a valid theory.

I have crooked pinkies. They are both so crooked people ask if they were broken and not set. Yup folks I had a freak accident where only my pinkies were injured. My GranStan has them too and now Blue Eyes. I love that.

My sister is my best friend. She's the yin to my yang, the snap to my crackle, the cheese in my macaroni. She is the worst shopper in the world and I still love her.

I don't know what people are talking about when they say asparagus makes your pee smell. I wonder if it's because my pee always smells weird.

I LOVE to dance. One time in college I was dancing at a tailgate (totally normal) and a lady standing around me said, "You'd never believe she's as sober as a judge." That remains one of my all-time favorite compliments to this day.

I have never had a favorite color. I was always uncomfortable when people would ask that when I was little. Now I find myself asking my kids. Jerk.

But enough about me...care to share any inane tidbits with us about yourself?

  1. I am on the grammar patrol too...can't help it! I'm so anal about my own grammar, if I'm unsure about something I stop where I am to look it up. I don't want to be the one other people are rolling their eyes at. I've seen a lot of "then vs than" issues lately, makes me crazy. And even though most people are using their cell phones to post these days, please, oh please, use capital letters and apostrophes!

    1. I'm glad to know it's not just me. I fear the iphone is killing knowledge of proper capitalization completely.

  2. I will answer ALL the comments you made about yourself- bc that is not wasting time, right? Hello? ...This thing on?

    ~Grammar stickler as well.
~I'm a talker. Did you know that? :) I'm learning as a small group leader to "button up" and let group be for them, not for me.
~I'm good at a lot stuff. It's a matter of getting started on it that is the problem.
~I care about everything being clean. I feel like I clean at least 3 hours a day, some days more. I hate doing the tubs.
~I read all the time. JOy Luck Club and anything Donald Miller are my faves. The autobiography of Wes Stafford is wonderful too.
~I like to talk about Christianity. Not politics- bc I don't know enough, and I'm a skeptic bc of perceived hidden agendas and the power of money and lobbyists swaying a person of power.
~I love music, not necessarily playing- played piano for 4 years. Becoming good takes practice practice practice!
~I grew up in the same house since I was 2. My parents still live there.
~Jack has a crooked finger, but it is bc he didn't get a broken finger set. We were looking at it 2 nights ago and talking about it.
~I wish I had a sister. My best friend is Rosie Pinkerman, but I consider you and a handful of girls in my inner circle.
~We ate asparagus 2 nights ago and even Lexi's diapers reeked of asparagus pee. I think you are crazy for not noticing!
~I love to dance too and you learn choreography super fast. I'm always impressed.
~I love all colors- after taking a color theory class in college. Makes it difficult for me to make decisions involving colors.
~I'm like Anna- indecisive! :) I need you and your mom to come pull the trigger and tell me what to buy.
There you go. I used to love filling out those about me quizzes when I was younger. Maybe I still do.

    1. I love it. I had NO idea you were a talker. I'll have to remember to shut up once in a while so you can get a word in. ;) Let's go shopping together when the kids are grown shall we?

    2. Yes, and we will buy skinny clothes. You know, at least 5# lighter than our current clothes and not from the maternity section.
Jack told our small group tonight that we should all take dance lessons. For real. Salsa. BOOM. The LORD hears our cries!

  5. holy crap. one- i went through a huge liar phase because i maybe i ran out of things to say! i've never seen anyone admit to being a liar before. it made me feel good to know that i wasn't alone. luckily, i worked through that years ago!

second- I HAVE CROOKED PINKIES AS WELL. yes! they look broken. but i was born that way! secretly, i hoped luke would have them as well.

and lastly. i can't smell asparagus pee either. it creeps me out sometimes that maybe something is wrong with me when people say that!

  8. fun reading this :) and you're not weird about the asparagus smell. studies have found it's from different compounds in the vegetable itself, and the younger the asparagus the more likely there will be a resultant smell - it's from asparagusic acid. also not everyone produces the smell, and not everyone can detect the smell. so maybe you're just one of the luck ones :)

-em (sorry about no CAPS. i know i should do better, but i'm one of the lazy ones :))
