6 wks, 6 lbs: Week 2

After another week of working out and using MyFitnessPal.com to track my food and exercise, I'm down to 145! (I have seen 144 and change on the scale a few times this week, but I'm going to sandbag and call it 145.)

Over the weekend B Daddy and I took the kids to the YMCA pool twice and I realized that I'll probably be there 3-4 times a week this summer. Being a in a swimsuit for a couple hours each day is AWESOME motivation to eat a healthy breakfast and get a morning work out in for sure.

I really like the way myfitnesspal is set up. I think (readers can you confirm?) it's similar to Weight Watchers in that you have a set calorie (points) goal each day and you can eat whatever you want to meet it. You end up making your own healthy choices because you want low-calorie food that is filling as opposed to being commanded to eat fish and steamed veggies for dinner each night. I always opt for the hardest workout I can squeeze in each day too, because I know a harder work out will mean I get more calories alloted to my day.

I've blown my calorie allotment on several days, but I still don't feel like I'm "dieting". And so far....I am seeing progress. Hard to believe it's only been two weeks though. Feels like forever. Anyone else working to lose some winter weight or baby weight out there? How's it going? Encourage me! :)

The Lake Party

I told you about the Cars Party Part 1 - and how my camera was AWOL for the Cars Party Part 2. "Cars Party" is probably a bit of a stretch since I forgot my Cars plates and the only reference to the movie was an exact replica of the cake I'd made 4 days before. Let's call it the lake party shall we?

I didn't have my big girl camera, but I did have my iphone handy, so here's a glimpse of how we celebrated The Squirt's big day with B Daddy's family.

Let's get our priorities straight: Cake first.

...onto presents.

Now for some boat time.

Driving with Pops always wears this guy out.

What a day!

Growing up, it was rare for me to see as much extended family in a year as our kids see in one weekend. What a gift to have both sides of our family in the same state!

A Cars Party

A certain someone turned 2 earlier this month and appropriately we celebrated with two parties - one at our house with my family and one at the lake with B Daddy's extended family. The one at our house was the one I took all the pictures of apparently.

One of Squirt's (and our) favorite kiddo movies so far has been Cars. Clearly a Cars-themed party was in order.

We kept it simple and spent under $30 on everything non-food related which I thought was decent. (My splurge was $3.80 for clearance priced Cars plates that I completely forgot to use at the lake party. Awesome.)

The guests were greeted by a checkered flag balloon arrangement.

More balloons and a homemade birthday banner festified the inside of the house. (Balloons = cheap + festive. Does it get better than that? This party planner says no.)

I painted yellow stripes down the middle of some black wrapping paper, added a few cars and voila! a tablecloth that matched the party theme for a few dollars.

After lunch we played a Cars-ified version of cornhole in the front yard, using tire inner tubes and homemade bean bags.

The bean bag toss somehow morphed into toddler bumper cars...which was more fun for everyone involved anyway.

Back inside there was a song to be sung and a Cars cake to be eaten.

Presents were given and received. What a joy to watch this face light up over shoes and a ball!

And finally, a movie was watched to end the afternoon. Has it really been just two years since our life accelerated into this new phase called parenthood?

Why My Hips Are Sore

Time to check in. After a week of working out and watching what I eat (with the exception of yesterday, which was kind of a bust) I'm down 2 lbs. WA HOOOOOOO! My scale at home has me at 146.8.

I've officially found a new work out: ZUMBA. Apparently I'm about 5 years late jumping on the band wagon (I blame marriage and motherhood). Alas. I read somewhere you typically burn 300-600 calories in a class, which is about what I would burn running for 30-60 minutes and Zumba = more fun than running.

If you've never been to a Zumba class (GranStan this probably applies to you) watch the video to see what it's all about. It's a high energy class that gets me my latin music, Spanish and dancing fix all in one hour.

We don't have balloons in my class, but we do have several overly enthusiastic males like the one in the video. Love it.

The Verdict

I can't believe it's taken me so long to get this post up. My new obsession with the YMCA and Celebrity Apprentice have seriously cut into my blogging time. I'll find a balance soon I'm sure.

We actually only cut the golden locks this past Sunday - so really I'm not too far behind. And the verdict? I just couldn't bring myself to pull out the clippers.

We sat the Squirt down in front of Finding Nemo and B Daddy sat in front of him with a jar full of jelly beans (AKA potty treats).

This is my favorite picture. See how awkward my arm looks and how hard I'm concentrating? Ha ha. After every cut I'd ask B Daddy, "you think that looks okay?" Snip. "Okay, how about now?"

15 jelly beans and about 40 minutes later we had this....

A painfully long time to do this little head, but I'm learning! : ) And it's not so choppy in the front as it looks here....the little man wouldn't let me straighten it out for the picture.

6 weeks, 6 pounds

I think you'll find this funny.

B Daddy and I have been working with the same group of middle schoolers at Buckhead Church for three years now. We each started leading a small group (me - girls, him - boys) when these students were in 6th grade and now they are about to head off to high school.

For some insane reason we both feel like God is calling us to continue to lead these groups of students into their high school years. (We led a group of 8th graders 4 years ago as well and chose not to move up to high school with them.) It really is an amazing thing to become a part of a student's life in a role that is somewhere between peer and parent. I love it.

Here's the funny part. Every year the high schoolers at our church take a trip to the beach over the summer. Panama City Beach to be precise. B Daddy and I have mostly been concerned with finding grandparents to watch our kids and (B Daddy) getting the time off of work to go.

And then we went and observed the high school ministry one evening. You see, we were both under the impression that we would be taking a group of 14 and 15 year olds to the beach. Awkward, developing, scrawny and gangly kiddos.

But apparently some high schoolers these days are 17 and 18. Who knew!? No longer awkward. Not really so scrawny. Yes it is a very different thing to be going the beach with a bunch of tan, highlighted and toned 18 year olds.

Not that looking good in a swim suit is what this trip is in any way about...although I am extremely grateful for the one-piece suit policy the girls have to abide by...but still. To be 6 lbs lighter would make me a lot less self-conscious on the beach all day long.

So I'm embarking on another self-help project. Eating less and lighter and working out with a goal. I think it's completely doable but am putting it out in cyberspace for some accountability. Slightly less than 6 weeks until we leave for Panama City and I have slightly less than 6 pounds to lose.

I'm using My Fitness Pal to log my food and exercise and I'll do a weekly weigh in on Mondays (since I started yesterday). Hopefully we'll see some progress. If I can shed these pounds, I'll only be 3 pounds heavier than my driver's license says I am!! : )

Keeping it Real

In April we went $160 over our "eating out" budget.
Our budget was only $100.

Busted.

To Buzz or Not to Buzz?

I'm conducting an informal poll and need your opinion.

Should I buzz these golden locks?

It's summer time and this little boy's head gets pretty sweaty. The Squirt is also currently in a washing-my-hair-is-pure-torture-and-I-would-rather-die-than-submit-quietly stage of life.

I'd been thinking of just cutting it shorter and then I read this blog yesterday and her before and afters got me thinking....what's your call??
